The Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) approved a bill on Thursday, the 14th, declaring S\u00e3o Janu\u00e1rio, Vasco da Gama\u2019s stadium, a historical, cultural, and tourist heritage site of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The bill now goes to Governor Cl\u00e1udio Castro for approval, and he is not expected to oppose it, having up to 15 days to make a decision. One of the main goals of Alerj is to enhance the stadium’s tourism potential to attract more visitors both nationally and internationally. Additionally, the bill recognizes S\u00e3o Janu\u00e1rio as a symbol in the fight against racism, not only in the history of football but also in the history of Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until the construction of the Maracan\u00e3 in 1950, S\u00e3o Janu\u00e1rio, along with Fluminense’s Laranjeiras stadium, was the main football stadium in the state, hosting major games of the Brazilian national team and also matches between Brazilian clubs and foreign teams.
