With a show by Luciano, São Paulo beats Corinthians and moves away from the Z4 of the Brazilian Championship

In Crespo’s return to Morumbis, the number 10 scored both goals in the 2-0 victory, this Saturday (19/7); Tricolor climbs to 13th

São Paulo secured a crucial 2-0 victory in the derby against Corinthians this Saturday at Morumbis Stadium, in the 15th round of the Brazilian Championship. Luciano scored both goals. With the result, São Paulo, which started the weekend as the first team outside the relegation zone, temporarily moved away from the group of the last four and now awaits Sunday’s matches to determine its position at the end of the round.

Corinthians, meanwhile, missed the opportunity to move closer to the top six, the group that guarantees a spot in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores. São Paulo returns to action next Thursday, when they visit Juventude at 7 pm (Brasília time) in the Brazilian Championship. Corinthians will face Cruzeiro at 7:30 pm on Wednesday in Itaquera, also in the points-based competition.

Luciano, the hero of the first half

Just 15 minutes in, São Paulo suffered a severe blow. After losing Enzo Díaz due to an illness during the warm-up, coach Hernán Crespo saw Oscar leave the game after a hard fall, injuring his back. Still, São Paulo managed to threaten Corinthians with Arboleda, who took advantage of a rebound from a corner kick to fire a first-time shot that flew just over the crossbar. Corinthians, in turn, responded with Romero, who was one-on-one with goalkeeper Rafael after a beautiful pass from Memphis Depay, only to see the São Paulo goalkeeper make a great save.

After that, Luciano took center stage. On the first attempt, Marcos Antônio crossed, Hugo Souza deflected the ball, and São Paulo’s number 10 deflected it over the goal from inside the six-yard box, wasting a clear scoring opportunity. After that, however, Luciano was more fortunate. In the 31st minute, the forward received the ball from André Silva, controlled it, and shot a low cross-shot, leaving goalkeeper Hugo Souza with no chance, who stretched out but couldn’t reach the ball.

Corinthians barely had time to absorb the first goal before Luciano scored the second. In the 34th minute, Wendell received the ball from Arboleda, advanced, and shot a cross-shot, seeing the number 10 appear in the middle and slide it into the back of the net, detonating the Morumbis stadium.

Dorival makes changes, but Corinthians doesn’t change

Coach Dorival Júnior decided to return for the second half without Memphis Depay. In addition to the Dutchman, Félix Torres and Martínez were substituted, but the tone on the field remained the same as in the first half: total dominance for São Paulo. Despite neutralizing Corinthians’ attacks, Tricolor only managed to reach the opposing goal with more danger in the 18th minute, when Cédric Soares reached the byline and crossed low for Alisson to finish first time, but it went straight at goalkeeper Hugo Souza. Later, Angileri and Talles Magno were also called upon by Dorival Júnior, but Corinthians’ attack lacked creativity.

They even began to have more possession in the final stretch of the game, partly due to the need to seek an equalizer, but they failed to attack São Paulo. In the final stretch, São Paulo simply had to manage the advantage they had built in the second half, but without giving up on pressuring the uncoordinated Corinthians’ ball out, leaving the field with three precious points in the Brasileirão and to the applause of the Tricolor fans.
