Premier League striker placed in coma after near-fatal injury

Nottingham Forest’s Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered serious abdominal injury after violently colliding with the goalpost

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery for an abdominal injury.

The information was released by the English newspaper Daily Mail. The Nigerian player collided with the goalpost in the game against Leicester, last Sunday (11/5), in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old player violently collided with the goalpost while trying to head the ball in the final minutes of the match – which ended in a 2-2 draw. “The club wishes to inform that Taiwo Awonyi has undergone emergency surgery following the abdominal injury he sustained during Sunday’s game against Leicester,” Forest wrote in a statement, in which it said it would provide more details “in due course”.

After colliding with the opposing goalpost, Awoniyi received medical attention for several minutes on the field and was substituted. It was only the following day that the club’s medical department confirmed the severity of the injury.
