With the result, Liverpool reached 76 points and opened up a 13-point lead over second-place Arsenal, who stumbled at home to Brentford. Thus, if Arsenal does not score in the next round and Liverpool wins their match, the Reds will confirm the Premier League title in the next round, still in April.
West Ham are having a disappointing season and will have to settle for just fighting to stay in the English football elite. The team has fallen to 17th place, with 35 points, 14 more than Ipswich Town, first in the relegation zone.
The match marked the return of goalkeeper Alisson. The Brazilian had not played in a Liverpool shirt since March 11, in the match against PSG, when the team ended up being eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The goalkeeper suffered a head clash in the Brazilian national team’s match against Colombia, on March 20, in the qualifiers and has been out of action since then.
The teams played an exciting first half at Anfield. Liverpool took control of the game, but West Ham also threatened Alisson’s goal. In the visiting team’s best chance, Kudus hit the crossbar. However, Salah’s star shone and the Egyptian, who recently renewed his contract, left Luis Díaz one-on-one with the goal to open the scoring. In the second half, the star of the match was goalkeeper Alisson. The Brazilian made at least three difficult saves that saved Liverpool at Anfield. West Ham posed danger on the counterattack and were the better side. Until, in the final moments of the match, the Hammers equalized through an own goal by Robertson.
However, in the 45th minute, Mac Allister took a corner and Van Dijk rose higher than the opposing defense and confirmed Liverpool’s victory. West Ham still hit the post in injury time, but the score of 2-1 prevailed until the final whistle.
