Of the five stadiums listed, four are in the United States and host mainly American football matches
Maracanã, Camp Nou, Santiago Bernabéu, San Siro 和 Azteca are among the main temples of sport, but none currently have a capacity for more than 100,000 fans. Of the arenas that fit into this category, four are in the United States and host mainly college football matches. One of these buildings is located in the most closed country in the world, North Korea.
See the list below:
Rungrado May Day Stadium (Pyongyang, North Korea)
With an estimated capacity of 114,000 to 150,000 spectators (official North Korean data indicate 150,000), Rungrado May Day Stadium is the largest stadium in terms of total capacity. Opened in 1989, it is best known for hosting the Arirang festivals, grand gymnastics and performance art spectacles, but it also hosts matches for the North Korean national football team. Its unique architecture, with 16 arches forming a crown, makes it an iconic structure.
Michigan Stadium (Ann Arbor, USA)
Nicknamed “The Big House,” Michigan Stadium is the largest stadium in the United States and the second largest in the world by capacity, with 107,601 seats. Although it is predominantly used for college football games, especially those of the Michigan Wolverines, it has also hosted soccer matches, including a friendly between Real Madrid and Manchester United in 2014 that attracted more than 109,000 spectators – a record attendance for a soccer game in the United States at the time.
Beaver Stadium (State College, USA)
Another giant of college football, Beaver Stadium, home to the Penn State Nittany Lions, has an official capacity of 106,572 spectators. Opened in 1960 and expanded several times, it is known for the passion of its fans, who create a “sea of white” on game days and are famous for their contagious energy. Like Michigan Stadium, it serves as a reminder of the passion for sports that extends beyond traditional football in some parts of the world.
Ohio Stadium (Columbus, USA)
With a capacity of 102,780 spectators, Ohio Stadium is home to the Ohio State Buckeyes college football team. Known for its “U”-shaped architecture and for being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this stadium is a landmark in Columbus. In addition to football, it has hosted several musical events and, to a lesser extent, football matches, showing its versatility as a venue for major entertainment.
Kyle Field (College Station, USA)
Completing the list of stadiums with over 100,000 seats is Kyle Field, on the campus of Texas A&M University. Its official capacity is 102,733 spectators, making it one of the largest college stadiums in the US. It is home to the Texas A&M Aggies football team and is famous for the “12th Man” tradition, where the fans consider themselves an additional player due to their unconditional support and deafening noise.
