Jurgen Klopp will return to the sidelines after more than a year. According to the Italian newspaper La Stampa, the former Liverpool coach will take charge of Roma from next season. Klopp left the current English champions in May 2024, after almost nine seasons – he had joined the Reds in October 2015. Since then, the German had been working off the pitch, as Head of Global Football at Red Bull. According to La Stampa, Klopp signed a deal with Roma on Sunday night (18).
The publication says that the interest was already long-standing, but the conclusion of the deal took a while to happen because the German had given his word to another club – the negotiation with this team did not materialize, which left the way clear for the Italians. The newspaper also says that Jurgen Klopp has already evaluated Roma’s squad and understands that it needs to be strengthened with at least six more players: three starters and three reserves. There would be two defenders, a right-back, a midfielder and two forwards.
At Roma, Klopp will replace Claudio Ranieri, who came out of retirement in November last year to take over a team that was going through difficult situations this season. Now, the situation is different. With one game left in the Italian Championship, Roma is in fifth place, with 66 points, and needs to win and hope for a stumble by Juventus in the final round to guarantee a place in next season’s Champions League. If this does not happen, the team will qualify for the Europa League, or, in the worst case scenario, for the Conference League – which it won in the 2021/22 season.
