The end of the second division of the Italian Championship sealed Sampdoria’s relegation. The Genoa club finished the campaign in 18th place in the table. Sampdoria went into the last round still with a chance of escaping, but needed a win against Juve Stabia, away from home.

The result, however, was a 0-0 draw. The team finished with 41 points – seven wins, 13 draws and 18 losses. The club released a note on social media in which it described the relegation as ‘one of the most painful moments’ in its history. Cittadella (39) and Cosenza (30) will also play in Serie C next season.

Founded in 1946, the Genoa team was already champion of Serie A in 1990/91, won the Super Cup the following season and the Coppa Italia four times: 1984/85, 1987/88, 1988/89 and 1993/94.

Sampdoria also reached the Champions League final in 1991/92 and was runner-up after losing (1-0) to Barcelona.
