The entity responsible for European football is considering significant changes to the format of the competition; authorities will meet in May.
UEFA is considering making three changes to the Champions League for next season. The information comes from the German newspaper Bild. One of the focuses of the entity’s analysis is the end of extra time. The idea is to reduce the burden on players. In the event of a draw in the knockout duels, the games will go straight to penalties, just like in the Libertadores, for example.
The second idea is to allow the teams that are better in the first phase to have the “advantage” of deciding the knockout games at home. The current regulations only provide for this benefit in the round of 16. The proposal gained strength after a complaint from Arsenal (third best in the initial phase this year). The English team decided away against Real and will also play as visitors in the second leg against PSG.
The new format also provides for teams from the same country to face each other in the playoffs, right after the initial phase. The idea is to return to the old format, where crossovers were only allowed from the quarter-finals onwards.
The proposals will be made on May 30 (Friday). Authorities will meet at a meeting in Munich, Germany.
