Atlético plays poorly, loses to Santos and becomes second-to-last in the Brazilian Championship

Two former Cruzeiro players scored in Santos’ victory over Atlético; match included an injury to Neymar.

Atlético remains winless in the Série A of the Brazilian Championship and is now second-to-last in the main national competition. On Wednesday night (16/4), Galo played poorly at Vila Belmiro and lost to Santos, 2-0, in the fourth round.

The Minas Gerais team conceded goals from Zé Ivaldo and Álvaro Barreal, both former Cruzeiro players, in the first half of the duel on the coast of São Paulo. Unlike what was seen in the first matches of the Brazilian Championship, Atlético was not very inspired offensively against Santos.

For most of the match, Cuca’s team circulated possession of the ball in an unproductive manner – and also paid for new defensive system failures against an opponent that lost Neymar, injured, in the first half.

With this result, Galo remains stagnant with two points in the Série A standings. Now, the Minas Gerais club only has a better campaign than Sport, which has one point. Peixe, in turn, reached four and rose to 12th place.

Upcoming matches between Santos and Atlético

Santos and Atlético will return to the field next Sunday (4/20), in duels valid for the fifth round of the Brazilian Championship. Peixe will have a classic against São Paulo at Morumbis, in the capital of São Paulo, while Galo will host Botafogo at Mineirão, in Belo Horizonte.
