Europe was the continent with the most representatives at the Club World Cup, but has already seen half of the teams eliminated
Manchester City started the Club World Cup as one of the favorites to win the title, but were defeated by Al-Hilal on Monday (30/6) and said goodbye to the tournament in the round of 16. The English team became the sixth European team to be eliminated from the competition.
Europe was the continent with the most representatives: 12 in total. Next comes South America, which received six spots. The African and Asian continents had four spots, as was the case in Concacaf, which organizes football in North and Central America and the Caribbean. There was also one spot for Oceania and another exclusive to a team from the United States, the host country.
The European teams eliminated from the Club World Cup
Of the 12 European teams that started the competition, three were eliminated in the group stage: Porto, Atlético de Madrid and RB Salzburg. The other three were eliminated in the round of 16. Benfica faced fellow European team Chelsea on Saturday (6/28) and lost 4-2. On Monday (6/30), it was Inter Milan’s turn to lose to Fluminense (2-0) and Manchester City’s defeat to Al-Hilal (4-3). It is certain that at least one more European team will be eliminated in the round of 16. That’s because Real Madrid and Juventus will face each other starting at 4:00 pm (Brasília time) this Tuesday (7/1) at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. On the same day, but starting at 10:00 pm, and at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Borussia Dortmund will face Monterrey.
