Conmebol: Alejandro Domínguez is reelected president

Paraguayan Alejandro Domínguez was reelected president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) this Thursday (12/6)

Alejandro Domínguez was reelected president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) this Thursday, after the 81st Ordinary Congress of the entity, in the city of Luque, on the outskirts of Asunción.

“With great passion, I renew my commitment. I am excited to continue with the work we have begun,” said Domínguez. The Paraguayan leader has been president of Conmebol since 2016 and, with his reelection, will continue in the position until 2029.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a message that Domínguez “has done an excellent job leading Conmebol in recent years and his reelection is deserved.” “Football will unite the world,” Infantino emphasized.

Alejandro Domínguez took over as president of Conmebol after the “Fifagate” case, the biggest corruption scandal in football, which led to the arrest of several executives from around the world in 2015.

Since then, the organization has recovered more than US$130 million (around R$720 million at the current exchange rate) that was embezzled.
