The president of the black and white beach club showed optimism regarding the possible permanence of the black and white number 10
Marcelo Teixeira gave an update on Thursday on the progress of the talks between Santos 和 Neymar regarding the renewal of his contract. In an optimistic tone, the president stated that a new contract is being discussed, with a different format than the one signed at the beginning of the year, valid for only five months.
“It is a scenario in which the current contract has been resolved between Santos and Neymar. Now we are moving forward directly so that we can discuss a new contract formula, a revamped one. The parties have already understood and moved forward in this direction. There is a very high possibility that he will remain here at Santos, with a new contract,” he told SporTV.
“With Neymar here, he will continue his treatment, happily, at home. The chances of him having greater comfort, support and support from the Brazilian fans increase the chance of him growing on the field. This means that his numbers off the field will also grow. It’s all part of a process. We had an important and impactful six-month experience in Brazil and around the world. He’s a star. This now makes Santos more cautious about the investment. The other party is understanding that we achieved a clear, positive and interesting result. The contact is good, positive, for both parties”, he added.
The president assured that, at the moment, Peixe has no debts with the attacking midfielder’s staff. The initial five-month contract guarantees at least R$21 million per month to the 33-year-old player, including image rights and salary. In total, it amounts to R$105 million.
Teixeira revealed that the amounts will be paid until the end of his term, at the end of 2026. He, in fact, revealed that he still doesn’t know how much the return of the number 10 brought to the club’s coffers.
“The numbers haven’t closed yet. They don’t close at the moment. It was a way for you to bring Neymar in first. We have indirect earnings that haven’t been calculated yet. We have a good number of games on open TV. The more games, the higher the revenue. We will only have this amount at the end of the Brazilian Championship. With Neymar on the field, the chance of achieving other financial results is clear. The audience is getting bigger and bigger. This represents a higher revenue. We are still working on these numbers. Santos doesn’t owe anything to Neymar. There is nothing outstanding. There is still a month to go, but we are bringing this forward so that the parties understand that Santos has reached a good and strong number. This number was diluted in installments until the end of my management. In the current format, we have reached a point. Now, we are reaching another point with a different format. Santos understood. Neymar’s side understood too. This is essential for us to understand how we are going to get to next year’s World Cup”, he declared. “It’s not a debt. Neither Neymar with Santos nor Santos with Neymar. We have a contract in force. What could happen? We reach the end of the contract and pay in full. That’s not the case. We’re not going to pay in full. We decided to pay in installments. Neymar understood. We’re going to spread this out over the course of our management,” he added.
Today, Marcelo Teixeira understands that Neymar’s return was a “fantastic transaction,” especially given the fact that Santos is currently rebuilding, after being relegated to the B Series of the Brazilian Championship.
“It was unexpected, wonderful in terms of bringing back an idol and giving the club the notoriety it would never have had without Neymar. Santos was coming from the Série B. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve the impact, the financial results, the number of partners that Santos has acquired and the properties in the short term, from January 2025 until the start of the Paulista. So far, we haven’t been able to measure it. Everything is still being reflected upon. We have proposals for two or three games abroad if Neymar stays. These are important things,” he said.
Since returning to Peixe at the end of January, Neymar has played 13 matches, including the friendly against RB Leipzig. During this period, he has scored three goals, had three assists and suffered two muscle injuries.
The president admitted that the number of matches is lower than desired, but the gains off the field are making up for it.
“As fans, we want Neymar on the field, of course, doing what he knows how to do and doing it well. On the field, the group’s confidence is different. The rival’s concern is also different. He, with 40%, is different. He did that against Botafogo. He unbalances. Now, he hasn’t played the number of games we wanted. It’s the recovery period that the medical department said could happen. As president, you brought him in at a time when the conclusion is that it was good, but it could be better. The perfect formula is for him to be good on and off the field,” he said.
The star’s last appearance was in the 1-0 defeat to Botafogo. On that occasion, he was sent off in the second half after receiving two yellow cards. If he does not renew, this will be his last game wearing the Santos shirt. The decision to renew or not should only be made between the end of June and the beginning of July.
